WordPress.com AI Website Builder Review: What It Builds, Editing Later, and Moving Away

WordPress.com's AI builder needs a paid plan (Personal from avg. US$4/mo billed yearly) and generates pages, layouts, images and a custom theme you can edit by chat or in the block editor. What it builds, how editing works, what an export carries, and how it compares with WP × Roamer AI.

WordPress.com's AI website builder runs on its paid plans: WordPress Agent takes your description and produces a starting point for the site, with pages, layout, images, copy and a custom theme made for you. It's aimed at blogs, portfolios, service sites and business sites. Afterwards you can keep editing by chat or switch to the block editor and edit yourself, and an AI change you don't like can be rolled back to the previous version. The site is standard WordPress, and WordPress.com says you can export the whole thing at any time, but the built-in export tool only carries your content. To move the theme, plugins and images too, you need a migration plugin or, on Business and above, a full backup download. Two things it can't do yet: the AI build flow doesn't include online stores, and on classic themes the AI assistant doesn't appear in the editor.

This review is organized around three questions: what it can build, whether you can edit it later, and whether you can take it with you. At the end we compare it with WP × Roamer AI and explain who each one suits.

Based on WordPress.com's site and support docs, checked in October 2026. Prices are in USD before tax, shown as the monthly average on yearly billing. We haven't tested every kind of site; where the official pages don't say, we note it.

Getting started and what it costs

The AI builder requires a paid plan, Personal or higher. Billed yearly, the monthly averages are US$4 for Personal, US$8 for Premium, US$25 for Business and US$45 for Commerce. Billed monthly they're US$9, US$18, US$40 and US$70, more than double. Annual plans include a custom domain for the first year; monthly plans don't. You can also start a site on the free plan, but it uses a wordpress.com subdomain, can't install plugins, gets only 20 AI assistant requests, and can't use the AI builder.

You can pay in New Taiwan dollars. WordPress.com supports 26 currencies; your account currency is set from your location when you sign up, and changing it later means contacting support. Its parent company Automattic is on Taiwan's Ministry of Finance list of foreign e-commerce sellers that issue cloud invoices, so individual buyers can get one. If your company needs an invoice with its Tax ID for bookkeeping, check with your accountant on how foreign digital services are handled.

What kind of site it can build

WordPress.com focuses the AI builder on four kinds of sites: blogs, portfolios, service sites and business sites. Describe the site you want, for example "a handmade dessert shop in Taichung that needs a menu, ordering details and photos of the store," and WordPress Agent produces a complete starting point with pages, layout, images and copy, plus a custom theme. You can then ask it for new pages, which follow the existing style.

Online stores need separate work. WordPress.com says the AI build flow doesn't currently include ecommerce, so to sell you add WooCommerce yourself on a paid plan; the Commerce plan comes with WooCommerce preinstalled and unlimited products. In other words, the AI builds the brand site, but the cart, payments and shipping are yours to set up, and Taiwan's common options such as convenience-store pickup and local payment gateways mean finding plugins and connecting them yourself.

WordPress.com doesn't say which languages the AI builder supports or how many pages it generates at once. We'd suggest giving the shop name, services, address, opening hours and the feel you want all in one go, so the output is closer to usable. Read every price and description the AI writes word by word before going live.

Can you edit it later?

Yes, in two ways. The first is to keep talking to WordPress Agent. Call it up while editing a page or post to rewrite a paragraph or suggest a title; in the site editor under Appearance, ask it to adjust the layout, colors and fonts; in the media library, have it generate new images or edit existing ones. It can also find, install and manage plugins and tell you which ones are active. You can even email it or talk to it in Telegram or Slack. The second way is to do it yourself in the block editor, and you can switch between the two whenever you like.

If something goes wrong, WordPress.com says AI edits can be undone, returning the site to its previous version. For backups, Personal and Premium include automatic backups, while Business and Commerce add real-time backups with one-click restore.

Three limits are worth knowing up front. First, the AI assistant works best with block themes; on a classic theme it won't appear in the editor, leaving only image generation in the media library and the Image block. Second, turning on the AI assistant installs a plugin managed by WordPress.com on your site. Third, AI usage on Personal and Premium is capped, while Business and Commerce get an enhanced assistant; WordPress.com doesn't say exactly how much each plan allows.

Also note that the AI edits your content and design. Keeping the site itself healthy, such as errors after a plugin update, a contact form that won't send, or a site that's slowing down, is still yours to diagnose and fix. WordPress.com has support you can ask, but you're the one doing the work.

Can you take it with you?

Yes, as long as you know what comes along. WordPress.com's AI builder page says "Everything you publish belongs to you. Export your full site anytime, take it anywhere," because what it builds is standard WordPress. In practice, the export under Tools produces a WordPress XML file with your posts, pages, comments, categories and tags, plus links to your media files. Your theme, customizations, plugins and the actual images, video and audio aren't included; media is exported separately.

To move the whole site as it is to another host, WordPress.com recommends a migration plugin, and Business and Commerce plans can also download a full backup directly. WordPress.com doesn't say whether the custom theme the AI made for you displays exactly the same after a move, so test it on the new host before you switch.

How it differs from WP × Roamer AI

Both are WordPress without managing your own server. The biggest difference is who does the work. WordPress.com's AI gives you a starting point and helps you edit in the editor; where the site goes next and how problems get fixed is still yours to decide and carry out. WP × Roamer AI is managed hosting that bundles the server, WordPress and Roamer AI. You describe what you need in plain language, Roamer AI lists a plan, goes into the site once you approve, screenshots desktop and mobile afterwards, takes a snapshot before every change, and rolls back when you say "undo."

The scope is different too. Besides building pages and changing layouts, Roamer AI can build WooCommerce stores; POP SOX in our demo took 8 messages. After launch, it also handles upkeep such as plugin updates, contact forms that won't send and white-screen rescues. There are no limits on plugins or themes, and both the interface and support are in Traditional Chinese.

If your site is already on WordPress.com and you're used to the block editor, turning on its AI assistant is the easiest path. If you want the site built and then hand off the edits and upkeep, that's the situation WP × Roamer AI was made for.

When WordPress.com is the better fit

If your site already lives on WordPress.com, such as a blog or portfolio you've run for years, the simplest move is to turn on the AI assistant in your paid plan: no migration and no new dashboard to learn. If you only want to blog and price comes first, the Personal plan billed yearly costs less than any of our plans, and it can install plugins. If you like doing things yourself and want to learn WordPress along the way, WordPress.com's block editor and AI assistant work well together for learning by doing.

It's also clear when it fits less well. If you want someone to build, edit and fix things for you, WordPress.com's AI only helps inside the editor, and the doing and deciding are still yours. For an online store, the AI build flow doesn't include ecommerce, and Taiwan's payment gateways and convenience-store pickup are yours to connect. If you need Chinese-language support or a Taiwanese company invoice, first make sure you're fine with how an overseas platform handles it. In those cases, handing the site to a local managed service saves more time.

How to choose

If you're in Taiwan, have no developer, and want to describe what you need in plain language and have someone build the site and look after it after launch, choose WP × Roamer AI Pro. If you'd rather do it yourself, like the block editor and mainly run a blog or portfolio, WordPress.com's Personal or Premium plan with the AI builder is enough. If you need an online store and want to stay on WordPress.com, choose the Commerce plan, but set up the cart and payments yourself. If you just want to try building something for free and don't mind a subdomain and ads, use WordPress.com's free plan, knowing it can't use the AI builder.
