AI Website Builder Guide 2026: Tools, Steps, Costs and Upkeep

You don't need to code to build a website with AI, but the tools take three very different routes, and they differ on editing, moving your site and who looks after it. A 2026 guide to the routes, six real steps, yearly cost and upkeep.

Yes. Building a website with AI is ordinary in 2026: describe your shop or brand, and within minutes to an hour or two you have a site with a home page, a menu, images and a contact form. What people end up regretting is rarely how the first version looks. It's what comes after: whether you can edit the site yourself, whether you can take it with you, and who deals with plugin updates or a site that won't load.

This guide is the full map of building a website with AI: what AI can do today, the three routes the tools take, the actual steps, the yearly cost, and who looks after the site once it's live. For a vendor-by-vendor comparison, see the 2026 AI website builder comparison.

Prices and features were checked against each vendor's site in October 2026. Overseas vendors run frequent promotions and show prices by region; their prices here are in USD before tax. Where we say "see vendor site", the official pages don't spell it out or vary by region, and we'd rather not guess.

What AI can and can't do for your website today

Today's AI can turn a description into a complete first version of a site: page structure, layout, colors, copy and images in one pass. The more specific you are, the closer it gets. A picture like "the first pot of tea on a misty mountain morning, quiet, lots of white space" works far better than "clean and professional". Once the site exists, most tools let you keep editing by chat: change a headline, swap an image, add a page.

The more capable tools go well beyond layout. Our own Roamer AI, for example, works inside WordPress: it builds forms, sets up SEO, sets up a WooCommerce store, and reads error logs to find out why a contact form stopped sending. In our public full demo, a blank WordPress install became a tea brand's site with a working store in 15 messages, and every prompt is published.

It's just as important to know what not to hand over. Real facts such as prices, phone numbers, opening hours and return rules shouldn't be invented by an AI. Judgment calls such as who pays return shipping or whether you ship to outlying islands involve law or business decisions; the AI can flag the risk, but the decision is yours. The first version is rarely perfect, so a few rounds of tweaks are normal. And integrating with your company's inventory or accounting system still calls for an engineer.

Three routes: generators, conversational agents and AI plugins

There are plenty of tools sold as an AI website builder, but underneath there are only three approaches. Once you know which one you're looking at, the choice gets much easier.

Generators: the fastest start, but features follow the platform

Wix launched Harmony in 2026, with a built-in AI agent, Aria, that can generate and revise a whole site by chat. Hostinger AI Builder has a drag-and-drop mode and a conversational mode that uses credits per request. WordPress.com generates pages and copy from a short description. The upside is that you never touch hosting, so the barrier is as low as it gets. The thing to check is how tightly the site is tied to the platform: Wix states plainly that sites run only on Wix's servers and can't be exported to another host. What Hostinger's and WordPress.com's AI builders can each do is covered in Hostinger AI vs WordPress + Roamer AI and the WordPress.com AI website builder review.

Conversational agents: the AI works inside your site

WP × Roamer AI is this kind. The site is standard WordPress on RoamerHost hosting, one site per isolated container. Roamer AI works like an engineer who knows WordPress: you describe what you need in plain language, it lists a plan for you to confirm, and then it builds pages, writes copy, generates images, sets up menus and forms, and handles SEO. After every step it takes desktop and mobile screenshots to check the layout, it snapshots the site before each change, and you can say "undo" to roll back. High-risk actions always need you to enter a confirmation code yourself.

The biggest difference from a generator shows up after launch. Changing opening hours, adding products, updating plugins or finding out why a form isn't delivering mail are all things you can keep asking it to do, and what it can't fix gets written up and handed to a human engineer. You can log into the WordPress admin yourself at any time, and the whole site can be exported. The safety design is covered in Is AI safe on your site?, and the overview is in WP × Roamer AI: finally, someone to look after your site.

AI plugins: best if you already use WordPress

Elementor's AI agent, Angie, can build full Elementor pages, widgets and code snippets by chat, and it lists a plan for you to approve before acting. It assumes you already have WordPress and hosting and roughly know your way around the admin. The AI speeds up layout work, but hosting, backups, plugin updates and who to call when the site goes down are still your job. Angie's pricing and features are detailed in What is Elementor Angie?, and plugins for writing and images are rounded up in Best WordPress AI plugins 2026. If you already have a site and only want AI to edit it, see five ways to let AI edit your WordPress site.

A real walkthrough: six steps from sign-up to a live site

Here is the WP × Roamer AI flow, which you can follow alongside the nine chapters of the AI website builder video tutorial and the full demo, where every prompt is published.

Step 1: Get your material ready

Most of the time goes into your content, not the AI. Collect your brand name, what you sell, who your customers are, address, phone, opening hours and prices, plus any photos, menus or brochures. Photos, Word files and PDFs can be attached straight into the chat, and if you have no photos the AI can generate scene images. Then describe the feel you want as a picture, and say what you don't want.

Step 2: Pick a plan and launch the site

About 60 seconds after payment, the latest WordPress is installed with the admin in your language and SSL in place. At checkout you can pick a memorable address, and you can connect your own domain later.

Step 3: Cover three things in your first message

Click "Build your site with AI" on the site's management page; Roamer AI opens with the site already connected. In the first message, say who you are, what you want built and who it's for, paste in your material and the feel you want, and end with "you decide the design, show me the home page first". It lists a plan and only starts once you say go.

Step 4: Look at the screenshots and say what feels off

You don't need to know why something looks wrong. Just say which device, where on the page, and what you see. Once you like the home page, say "build the other pages in the same style" and the new pages reuse the same colors and fonts.

Step 5: Add a store when you're ready to sell

One message can cover which products to list, categories, payment methods, shipping rates and the free-shipping threshold. In the demo, the AI simulated a cart on its own, noticed that paid delivery stayed selected even above the threshold, and fixed it. The full flow is in Build an online store with AI.

Step 6: Walk through it yourself before launch

Check every page on a computer and a phone, send the contact form once, and place a test order. You can also ask "is it ready to go public?" and it will tell you plainly what's missing, such as sample posts still published or a return policy that may not comply with Taiwan's Consumer Protection Act. Connect your domain and you're live.

How long does it take? Most of the 29 sites on our member showcase had a presentable first version within one to five days, and some members had a home page live on day one. In the public sock-brand demo, the AI's working time from a blank site to taking orders was about 71 minutes. The difference comes down to preparing content and the rounds of tweaks.

What building a website with AI costs per year

When comparing cost, look at the total for the first year, what you pay each year after that, and whether each content change costs extra. Vendor prices are as published on their sites, checked October 2026; design agency rates come from the public quote statistics of PRO360, a Taiwanese freelance marketplace.

A design agency builds itTemplate-based company site typically NT$20,000 to 50,000; custom from NT$100,000Design and launch; hosting and domain depend on the contractEach change quoted separately, or a maintenance contract

The last row is the one people underestimate. Agency quotes usually stop at launch; later edits and plugin updates are quoted separately or covered by a maintenance contract, and in PRO360's figures yearly maintenance commonly runs NT$20,000 to 40,000. How to break the costs down is in What a website costs in Taiwan in 2026; to count your own time as well, see WordPress self-hosted vs managed; renewal prices and invoicing for WordPress hosts in Taiwan are compared in Best WordPress hosting in Taiwan 2026.

Who looks after the site once it's built

Once the site is live, something comes up every month: opening hours change, a promotion needs a new image, new products go up. WordPress core and plugins also get regular updates, many of them security fixes (October's examples are in the WordPress October vulnerability roundup), and now and then an update breaks a layout or leaves you with a white screen.

This is where the three routes differ most. A generator platform handles hosting and system updates and you manage content, but what you can change is limited. With an AI plugin, hosting, backups and updates are all on you. WP × Roamer AI hands those to the AI as well: it backs up first, updates plugins in batches, checks the home page and admin afterward, and when the site goes white it reads the error log to find the culprit. Changing a line of text no longer means waiting for a quote; the numbers are in the real cost of small edits.

Whichever route you choose, keep three things in your own hands: the domain registered to you or your company, the admin account for the site, and at least one backup stored somewhere else. With those three, you're never stuck if you change vendors or platforms.

How to choose

If you're in Taiwan, have no engineer, and want a site that's yours with someone to look after it: choose WP × Roamer AI Pro, avg. NT$999/mo (billed yearly), with hosting, WordPress and AI in one plan and a site you can export in full. If all you need is a one-page business card or event page that won't change much: Wix or Canva is enough. If you only want the website and plan to do the work yourself: WordPress Basic, avg. NT$299/mo (billed yearly). If you already run WordPress and can handle layout: install Elementor AI or Angie. If budget comes first and you can prepay several years: Hostinger AI Builder has the lowest monthly average. If your site already lives on WordPress.com: turn on its AI assistant.

Still undecided? Real results are the best guide. The Roamer AI full demo shows three brands built from blank sites, and the member showcase has 30 sites members built themselves. If it looks like a fit, pick a plan on the WP × Roamer AI plans page and your site is up about 60 seconds after payment.

FAQ

Q: Can I really build a website with AI if I can't code at all?

Yes. None of the tools in this guide require code. The difference is how much is left to you afterward: with a generator you edit in its editor, with an AI plugin you manage the hosting, and with WP × Roamer AI you can ask for content edits, plugin updates and troubleshooting in plain language. Most members on our showcase had never built a site before.

Q: How long does it take to build a website with AI?

Launching the site takes minutes; the first version depends on its size. In our public demos, a patisserie got a home page from one message, and a sock brand got a company site plus an online store in 8 messages. Most of the real time goes into preparing content and tweaking, and most showcase members finished in one to five days.

Q: Can I edit an AI-built site myself later?

It depends on the tool. WordPress-based sites come with a full admin you can log into at any time to change text and images; generator platforms let you edit inside their editor, limited to the features they offer. With WP × Roamer AI you can do either: ask Roamer AI, or edit it yourself in the WordPress admin.

Q: Will Google rank my site lower because AI built it?

No. Google has said that rankings reward content that is helpful and trustworthy, regardless of whether AI produced it. What hurts rankings is thin, inaccurate or heavily duplicated content, so the site still needs your real services, prices, case studies and contact details. Roamer AI can set the SEO title and description on every page, but the substance has to come from you.

Q: Can I build an online store with a shopping cart using AI?

Yes. WP × Roamer AI can install WooCommerce, add products, set up payment and shipping, and style the cart and checkout to match the rest of the site. For credit card payments you apply for a merchant account yourself with a payment provider such as ECPay or NewebPay, then ask it to configure the plugin. The steps are in Build an online store with AI.

Q: I already have a Wix site. Can I rebuild it on WordPress with AI?

Yes, but Wix sites can't be exported to another host, so "moving" really means rebuilding on WordPress, bringing over data such as products and contacts, and redirecting old URLs so your Google rankings hold. What carries over and how to sequence it is covered in Wix to WordPress.
